Sir Steve Redgrave shakes his head as he talks about the terrible injuries suffered by the man who helped him make Olympic history.
Redgrave is at pains to remain calm, but the horror of the accident that left fellow Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell facing a six-month battle to recover from head and brain injuries caused when he was hit by a passing truck while filming in the United States cannot hide the emotion in his words.
‘I want him to get back to the James know and love,’ said Redgrave last week.

Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave suffered several broken bones after being thrown from his bike in a race across America.
Redgrave, 48, who won five gold medals in rowing, broke two ribs, a cheek bone and a wrist.
He suffered a puncture in the Appalachian Mountains on the fundraiser. Redgrave said; 'Of all the things that could have stopped me - tiredness, fatigue, diabetes - a simple blowout on the front wheel at a corner can cause such pain.'

Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave suffered multiple broken bones after being thrown from a bike during a gruelling 3,000 mile race across America.
The 48-year-old, who won a record five gold medals in rowing, spent two nights in hospital after fracturing two ribs, his wrist and a cheek bone.
He was left with blood pouring down his face after he was sent flying head first over the handlebars of his mountain bike when he suffered a blow-out puncture.

Searle won Olympic gold in Barcelona in 1992 with brother Jonny and cox Garry Herbert, and bronze in a four in 1996, before retiring after the 2000 Olympics.
Sir Steve, a five-time Olympic rowing champion and widely considered Britain's greatest Olympian, told the Press Association; 'A fit and strong Greg Searle is going to be a good person to have in anyone's team.'

'You can really feel the pressure on the Canadians and there are a lot of lessons here for London 2012,' he said.
'I'm a pretty experienced Olympian but I've no idea what it's like to compete at a home Olympics.
